What is Diabetes, and what causes it?
Diabetes is a metabolic disease in which the body’s inability to produce any or enough insulin causes elevated levels of glucose in the blood. Some of the first symptoms at the onset of the disease include increasing thirst and a constant need to urinate. It is a condition which is due to large amount of glucose in the blood, because the body can not use it properly for the functioning and metabolism processes. Here at Schneider Medical Group, an internal medicine clinic in Raleigh, NC, we believe that food is quite responsible for either the promotion or the prevention of diabetes. But it also depends on the ability of body to process glucose.
What role can diet play in curing or avoiding diabetes?
People should avoid consumption of food that can increase the blood sugar in addition to cholesterol. People should avoid eating processed foods, foods containing high saturated fats or with trans fats, along with foods having syrups and sugars added in it. Such type of foods having high fats and sugars not only disrupt the balance between insulin and glucose that can cause inflammation, but they also contribute to the risk factors like being overweight.
Carbs need to be watched as well. Yes, they are necessary to fuel the body, but some carbohydrates in certain foods raise blood glucose more quickly than that of others. Foods are also ranked on the basis of how they compare to a reference food like white bread. People must use foods that are on the low end of the Glycemic Index such as lean meats, many whole-grain breads, some legumes, and all non-starchy vegetables. If you need help determining what foods you should avoid, make an appointment today with our diabetes doctor in Raleigh, NC.
Do foods really help prevent diabetes?
Of course, healthy foods acts virtually the same for diabetes as they act for anyone. People with diabetes or pre-diabetes should consume reasonable portions of foods in order to avoid weight gain and to avoid aggravating elevated blood sugar levels. Choose whole grain foods instead of processed foods, and eat plenty of fish and lean cuts of meat. Consume plenty of fresh vegetables, but limit the amount of fruit due to the sugar content. Beans and legumes are good to include in the diet as well, as these are good sources of fiber and can help slow the body’s absorption of sugar in the blood stream.
